Once you are in the neighborhood, and have decided where you want to start the hike from, find the closest parking from the below section. The trail sections are variously paved, wooden boardwalk, packed mud, or rocky paths. There are a few parking options when visiting the Kapalua Coastal Trail. It’s so popular that there used to be a ladder to get you in and out, and there was a huge outcry when a landowner tried to prevent access.

The views and photo opportunities on the Kapalua Coastal Trail are one of a kind. Always be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution when hiking anywhere in Maui, especially when the ocean is involved. That’s what I did because we were spending the day at Kapalua Bay Beach and I hadn’t planned on hiking. However, it can be rocky in spots so if you don’t forget shoes as I did, I’d bring a pair to wear. That didn’t bother me but if you think it might be an issue, I’d also bring a light jacket. As for your bottom half, shorts are fine as you won’t be hiking through much foliage and it can be warm out.

The first is the Mahana Ridge Trail, which is a strenuous 10 miles round trip, starting at Fleming Beach or the Kapalua Village Center and ending at the Maunalei Arboretum. This Kapalua hiking trail climbs over 2000 feet in elevation, and the views of Kapalua Bay and West Maui are outstanding along the way. Make sure to bring plenty of water on this hike; many report it is strenuous. After the rain, this trail can get quite muddy, making for extra work and a harder day. Wait until a couple of sunny days have passed before taking on this hike.

Namalu Bay (Cliff House)

This easy hike is 1.76 miles one way, or about three and a half miles round trip. It runs from the south end of Kapalua Bay (where you can park in the Bay Villas beach access parking lot) to D.T. Fleming Beach (the beach at the north end of the Montage Kapalua, where you can park in the Fleming Beach parking lot). If you’re looking to take a break, this is a good spot since it’s about the midpoint of the trail. This is also where you can park if you want to start the trail in the middle.

Explore This Park

So, as you journey along the Kapalua Coastal Trail, let the beauty of Namalu Bay and the iconic Cliff House captivate your senses. Though, I’ve spotted a few on leash near the residential sections. Well, we couldn’t resist exploring the tide pools and the mesmerizing Dragon’s Teeth area along the way.

What to Know Before You Hike

The Kapalua Coastal Trail starts here once you leave the parking lot (if you choose to start here) and follows the edge of the bay between the beach and the condos. You’ll see a sign at the start of the trail and after that, you can follow the walking path past the bay and to our next location. Namalu Bay has been a popular cliff jumping spot with the locals for many years. The cliffs are about 12 to 15 feet above the sea, and the water below is deep and clear. After the Gold Rush, San Francisco's population exploded and the city's downtown area got very crowded with new buildings and neighborhoods.

Nope, there’s no cost to hike the Kapalua Coastal Trail making it a great free activity to do in Maui. Both parking and access to the trail are free though parking can be limited depending on how busy it is when you go. The Kapalua Coastal Trail is generally considered an easy hike because it’s partially paved and doesn’t have much elevation gain.

There are accommodations along the Kapalua Coastal Trail, from the Kapalua Villas to the Ritz Carlton. The path also skirts the grounds of the Montage Kapalua Bay, formerly the Kapalua Bay Hotel. Montage Kapalua Bay is one of the top accommodation choices in the area.

If you need to use the bathroom or grab a bite to eat, you have a few options on the Kapalua Coastal Trail. You can also grab snacks from the beach crew at Kapalua Bay Beach or a full meal from the Burger Shack at D.T. The Kapalua Cliff House is located on the right side of Namalu Bay and is a historic building that was once used by the Honolua Plantation. These days it’s run by the Montage Kapalua Bay and is used to host private events. In the middle, you can start at either The Ironwoods or the Dragon’s Teeth Access Trail.

You’ll reach this part of the trail after passing by the Kapalua Cliff House where the trail turns from paved to dirt (pictured above). By far the majority of visitors to Maui choose to base on the west side, where there is a large selection of accommodations available, from resorts and hotels to vacation rentals.

Historic oceanfront playgrounds, classic city park charmers and boisterous adventures - smaller theme parks and attractions offer an array of ways to play. A year after the destruction of the second Cliff House, Mrs. Merritt obtained approval to construct a third Cliff House.

Because so many of the city's wood-frame buildings burned after the 1906 earthquake, builders began to construct San Francisco's new buildings in fireproof steel-reinforced concrete. The third Cliff House, constructed in concrete, was designed in a streamline, classically inspired architectural style; the building settled into the landscape rather than dominating the ocean view. Open to the public in 1909, the Cliff House carried on the tradition of sumptuous dining rooms and elegant entertainment. The Cliff House was originally built in 1940, and was used as a gathering location for plantation staff and celebrations.

If you don’t find parking in Kapalua Bay Parking, continue on the Lower Honoapiilani Road. The next free parking option you will come to is the one for the Oneloa Beach (Ironwoods Beach). You are basically going to hike the Kapalua Coastal Trail in the reverse direction, and the trailhead is right next to the Mahana Ridge Trail trailhead. The trail is easily accessible from either end or multiple points in the middle. You have a few steps at the end of the Ironwoods section and some minor inclines, but for the most part, this trail doesn’t involve a lot of climbing up and down. Fleming Beach Park, you also have the trailhead for the Mahana Ridge Trail, a difficult 10-mile, out-and-back hike.
